BBC: Ferrari interested in Raikkonen

The highly credible BBC F1 Chief writer, Andrew Benson claims his sources close to Ferrari confirm that senior figures are interested in replacing Massa with Raikkonen.

BBC responds to Ilta-Sanomat’s report on the Raikkonen-Ferrari story.

“Sources close to Ferrari say senior figures at the team believe Raikkonen would be the ideal replacement for Massa”, Andrew Benson mentioned. “However, a decision to re-employ him would effectively be an admission that they made a mistake by paying off the Finn at the end of 2009, ending his contract a year early, when they signed Alonso”, he added.

Ferrari president Luca Di Montezemolo’s preference is said to be to keep Massa if the 32-year-old can prove he can deliver consistent results – as he did in the second half of last season after a similar warning from the top.

Other candidates for the drive are Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg and Force India’s Paul Di Resta.

BBC is the most reliable when it comes to Formula 1 news, so if they claim that Ferrari are interested in hiring Raikkonen, there is certainly a foundation behind all the speculation and rumors in recent days.
